Buddhism seems deeply strange to me (in a different way from the strangeness of other religions). If you are desperate to get off the cycle of rebirth and karma, just accept the sensible atheist view that the physical world is everything and that you end when you die. No rebirth -- problem solved! Of course to those of us who do not want to die, this is not a solution. We don't want to be reborn when we die; we just don't want to die (at least not for the foreseeable future).
